Course Description

This course is designed to give students real lifeexposure to reading, listening,

and speaking in English. The class will use short segments from Arirang Radios

Wonders of Jejuprogram. The program discusses various places and things to do

and visit around Jeju Island, allowing students easy access to the content

material. Students will listen to the segment and read along using a script. Then

students will discuss vocabulary, grammar, and complete comprehension activities.

Students will then have a chance to practice speaking with fluency by recreating

the segment or creating their own addition to the segment. This class

complements the Summer Term 2 as practice using more casual, informal

English.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to listen to a short audio recording and answer basic

comprehension questions on the content

Students will be able to self-check vocabulary and grammar patterns they do not

understand while listening

Students will be able to read with fluency using a short script

Requirements

Participation is STRONGLY encouraged in order to build confidence in language ability

Ask questions when needed

Feel free to contact teacher as needed

Please use good cell phone manners during class (silent/vibrate, take calls outside)

Classes will start on time, please do your best to be there!

Course Description

This course focuses on learning about different cultures within the US. Students will view three films: The Devil Wears Prada, A River Runs Through It, and Little Miss Sunshine. Students will compare and contrast different lifestyles within the US based on social status and location. Students will watch the films in class, discuss the film and practice various scenes from the movie in English. All films and scripts are available at the English Education Center Library, and can be borrowed at any time following the class.

Learning Objectives

While much of this course will focus on listening to the film, students will also be expected to discuss the films, specifically how the people in them live in different cultures although they are all set in the US. Students will also be asked to read segments of the movie scripts.

Requirements

It is strongly recommended to mute your cell phone.

It is strongly recommended that you attend both classes for the level you are in

Classes will start on time

As classes will be built upon each other, and we will often be continuing work

started in previous classes, we recommend that you not miss class

Course Description

Members will examine and discuss their interpretations of western literature short stories, poems, and Power English. Juxtaposing the membersunderstandings of their own cultures with the reading. We will go over concepts of literary works involving naturalism, realism, transcendentalism, existentialism, romanticism and their movements. We will take a nature walk at a gotjawal to see how nature influenced these writers.

Learning Objectives

Members will be able to interpret western key expressions/ terms and cultural

concepts in English literary works.

Members will be able to discuss the differences and similarities for key

expressions/terms and cultural concepts with their own cultures using English.

Members will be able to apply their knowledge of English and cultural awareness

in a useful way using Globish and useful idioms.

Requirements

We will read and go over the material together in class. Access to the read the

materials will be provided before class if you wish.

Be prepared to share your ideas with the class, in an English conversation, about

the subject matter. Optional: Bring stories/poems that connect with the classes

theme.

Each week will focus on a current news event. Students will go over related vocabulary and grammar patterns first. Then students will watch the video clip and discuss the contents and answer some comprehension questions. Students will then practice fluent speaking by re-reading the script in pieces. This class complements the Summer Term 1 class as practice using more formal English language.

Course Description

Students in this course will learn several Jeju Myth and Legends from Hyun Yong-Joons book Legends of Jeju Island. Students will read various legends from different locations in Jeju. At the end of the class, students will prepare a performance of one of the legends that we learned about.

Learning Objectives

This class is a reading and discussion class. Students will read the legends, or listen to them and discuss the legends together. Finally, students will work together to create a performance of one of the legends for the final day. This will be done in one or two groups based on class numbers.

Requirements
