Program Overview

Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) is designed to provide international students with opportunities to study at higher education institutions in Korea, both undergraduate and graduate level. The scholarship aims to enhance international education exchange and strengthen mutual friendship between Korea and participating countries.

Qualifications

  • Graduate Program

    대학원 Scholarship Period, Qualifications으로 구성된 테이블 입니다.
    Scholarship Period Master's Degree 1 year Language Courses + 2 year Degree Courses
    Doctoral Degree 1 year Language Courses + 3 year Degree Courses
    Qualifications
    1. Applicants must hold citizenship of NIIED designated countries that are invited to take part in the GKS program.
      * Korean citizens and Koreans holding dual citizenship are not permitted to apply for this program.
    2. Applicants must be under the age of 40 as of September 1st of the inviting year. However, an academic professor who are under 45 years of age as of September 1st of the inviting year that also holds a citizenship of one of the Official Development Assistant (ODA) recipients are eligible to apply.
    3. Applicants must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree as of July 31 of the inviting year.
      * Applicants who have graduated from a high school in Korea or ​have completed an undergraduate program, a master's program, or a doctoral program in Korea are not eligible to apply for the program. (Exception: GKS scholars)
    4. Applicants must have maintained the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) equivalent to or higher than 80% in their previous degree program.
  • Undergraduate Program

    대학원 Scholarship Period, Qualifications으로 구성된 테이블 입니다.
    Scholarship Period Bachelor's Degree 1 year of Korean language course + 4~6 years of undergraduate program
    Associate Degree Program 1 year of Korean language course + 2~3 years for associate degree program
    Qualifications
    1. Applicants must hold citizenship of NIIED designated countries that are invited to take part in the GKS program.
      * Korean citizens and Koreans holding dual citizenship are not permitted to apply for this program.
    2. Applicants must be under the age of 25 as of March 1st of the inviting year.
    3. Applicants should have graduated from high school. (Please refer to the updated application guidelines for detailed information.)
      * Applicants who have graduated from high school in Korea applicants who have bachelor’s degree are not eligible to apply for the program.
    4. Applicants must have maintained the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) equivalent to or higher than 80% in their previous degree program.

Selection Procedure

Graduate and Undergraduate Program

  1. 1st Round of Selection
    Applicants submit their applications either to Korean Embassies in their home countries or Korean universities designated by NIIED. Each embassy and university selects the successful candidates among the applicants based on NIIED’s selection criteria.
  2. 2nd Round of Selection
    The NIIED selection committee conducts the 2nd round of selection among candidates that pass the 1st round of selection.
  3. 3rd Round of Selection
    (Embassy Track Applicants ONLY)
    The applications of the 2nd round successful candidates will be reviewed by the universities for admission. The candidates must receive admission from at least one of the universities they applied in order to be selected as GKS scholars.  
  4. Final Result Release
    The announcement of finally selected GKS scholars (3rd round successful candidates of embassy track and 2nd round successful candidates of university track) will be made.

Scholarship Benefits

Graduate Program

  • Round-trip Airfare, Settlement Allowance, Monthly Allowance, Language Training Fee, Tuition, Medical Insurance Fee, Research Support Fee, Thesis Printing Fee, Degree Completion Grants
    * Korean Proficiency Grants: 100,000 KRW per month for scholars who have valid TOPIK level 5 or 6

Undergraduate Program

  • Round-trip Airfare, Settlement Allowance, Monthly Allowance, Language Training Fee, Tuition, Medical Insurance Fee, Degree Completion Grants
    * Korean Proficiency Grants: 100,000 KRW per month for scholars who have valid TOPIK level 5 or 6
